Sound familiar?
Many of my new students tell me that even after years of trying to learn Portuguese on Apps or even after having lessons, they still can’t confidently string a sentence together in Portuguese or understand a native Portuguese speaker.
Why is that?
Well, you might not like the answer, but the one thing that could be stopping you from learning Portuguese, might just be you!
Learning a language takes time and dedication and you have to really work hard at it. The more you study, the better you will get!
Did you know that you only need about a 1000 words to have a reasonable conversation in most languages, including Portuguese?
So how do I start?
First you need to set a realistic goal. You have to be disciplined and focus on what is important for you! Do you want to learn how to order in a restaurant and impress your friends when they come on holiday? Do you want to be able to chat with your neighbour about sports?
Make that your goal!
Working at your own pace, is not recommended if you want to make significant progress. Any break from study will set you back. You need to be consistent!
The Portuguese in Six Weeks online courses, are designed with all of this in mind!
It should also be fun!
If you are fortunate enough to live in Portugal you can use the phrases you learn to speak to the locals! Even if you are just saying ‘bom dia, como está?’ to your neighbour, every little bit helps to build your confidence.
Prepare yourself mentally before each lesson. Try not to think of it as a task, but as an adventure. Through language learning you have the ability to enter into a new world. All those words you didn’t understand before will gradually begin to get clearer and clearer!
The courses
I created these Online Courses as a way of giving people a reasonable goal. After testing them out on various students it became clear, that if you study regularly, you can learn a substantial amount of Portuguese in just six weeks. You can even do it online!
What will I learn?
In these Six Week courses you will be studying dialogues in European Portuguese and breaking them down. You will also learn Portuguese nouns, articles, adjectives, verbs and basic conversation, passively using simple dialogues. The grammar will be taught gradually as needed.
Listening is also very important and the short audio clips will help you with pronunciation as you go.
Do I have to learn verbs?
Yes, the verbs are an essential part of the grammar and make up a vast percentage of the language. Don’t worry, they are not as scary as they first appear. Take a look at this article to find out more about verbs.
Overall these Six Weeks courses, will teach you practical conversational Portuguese that you can use.
- Week Zero – will give you a chance to take a trial run and see how the courses work, without investing too much, and learn a fair bit in the process if you are a beginner!

Boa tarde, Amanda.
Yes I am interested.
Are there specific days and times for the online courses?
Hi Jan,
You set the times for the course – it is completely online! It is preferable to do it as indicated: Conversational – twice weekly, with daily revision and the Speak Like a Native – daily, with one day off a week. I am here for any questions you might have as you do the course. You can take a look at the preview of day one of the Speak like a Native course and that will give you an idea how the course functions. Here is the link: Course Preview
